From Hiroshima to Mainz (Part II)

We are very happy to share a second report written by our visitors from Japan – this time by Dr. Hiromi Sugiyama of the Epidemiology Department of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima, Japan:

It was a wonderful opportunity to visit Mainz, Germany, and engage in academic exchange with researchers and students. From May 19 to 21, 2026, I had several opportunities to introduce the work of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF), which has conducted long-term studies on the health effects of radiation among atomic bomb survivors and their children.

During my visit, I gave lectures to students in the Master of Science in Epidemiology program at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, participated in the symposium “Modelling and Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Damage from Environmental Exposure,” and presented a seminar at the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics. I also had the valuable opportunity to visit the TRIGA research reactor. The interactive discussions with students and international colleagues were both enjoyable and stimulating, providing valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and strengthen scientific collaboration.

Beyond the academic program, I enjoyed the warm hospitality of our hosts. A traditional German dinner, complete with wine glasses marked with volume measurements—a uniquely German and practical touch—was particularly memorable. After the final colloquium, participants gathered at a local ice cream shop and continued conversations in a relaxed atmosphere. These experiences made the visit especially rewarding, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who organized the program and made it possible. I would also like to thank VEBIK for its support of this visit and for promoting international academic exchange.
